Toronto/June 23rd – Today, in front of a community school, a trio of progressive women TDSB candidates announced that they are joining forces, committing to bring accountability, transparency and collaboration back to a school board that is in desperate need of change.

Candidates Jennifer Story (TDSB Ward 15, Toronto-Danforth), Marit Stiles (TDSB Ward 9, Davenport) and Ausma Malik (TDSB Ward 10, Trinity Spadina) are joining together to offer Torontonians a fresh choice of leadership for a better TDSB, putting kids, parents and communities first.

“Like many parents across Toronto we’ve become increasingly concerned about the leadership and direction of our education system” said Jennifer Story, trustee Candidate in Ward 15 Toronto-Danforth.

“It seems like every day the board is in the news and for all the wrong reasons – these constant distractions are taking the focus away from our kids’ education. It’s time for change.”

Having each worked for many years at the grassroots level within their respective wards, Story, Stiles and Malik are looking to use their considerable experience to champion their communities needs at the board.

“Like never before public education needs passionate, skilled and credible champions: people who have a track record of community organising and collaboration to make a difference. I’m proud to be running alongside these talented women” said Ausma Malik, Candidate TDSB Ward 10, Trinity-Spadina.

The three candidates also highlighted some of the challenges all parents face, challenges they will tackle head on if elected.

“I know I’m not the only parent who has spent my kids’ years in the school system wondering why we have to fill out the same forms year after year, why communication between board and parent is so uneven, and why parents and the community are on the outside looking in when it comes to school board decisions” said Marit Stiles, Candidate TDSB Ward 9, Davenport.

As the school year wraps up the campaign begins and Malik, Stiles and Story hope to grow their network of candidates throughout the municipal election.  They are looking for like-minded candidates who want to be part of a new leadership at the TDSB; trustees that will work both with each other and for their communities, keeping the interests of kids and parents front and centre
